Local Business Highlight: Twin Sisters Creamery
TWIN SISTERS CREAMERY
In the heart of Ferndale, Washington, you'll find Twin Sisters Creamery, a small but mighty cheese producer with a love for family, community, and blue cheese! Founded by Lindsay and Jeff Slevin, Twin Sisters Creamery is a true family business, named after their twin daughters, Maddie and Lexi.
“We always wanted to have our own business” Lindsay shares. With her background in cheese, spanning importing, distribution, and retail, and Jeff’s expertise in manufacturing and IT, cheesemaking was the perfect intersection of their skills and interests. In 2013, they purchased a lot in Ferndale, dedicating the next few years to building their facility from the ground up. By 2015, Twin Sisters Creamery opened its doors, and this August marks their 10th anniversary!
At the heart of their delicious cheese is of course the milk. Twin Sisters Creamery sources rich, high-butterfat Jersey cow’s milk from Twin Brook Dairy in Lynden, a fifth-generation family farm just 12 miles away.
“We specifically wanted Jersey milk because of its high fat and cream content — it’s perfect for the type of cheese we make” Lindsay explains. As a raw milk producer, that freshness and quality are crucial. “We pick up the milk ourselves, bring it back to the creamery, and within an hour, it’s already being turned into cheese.”
One of the things Lindsay and Jeff love most is seeing their cheese come to life in local restaurants like Aslan, where their blue cheese has been a key ingredient for over six years. “We love restaurants. We love chefs. It’s so exciting to work with them.” Lindsay says. It was through community connections like Sustainable Connections that Twin Sisters linked up with Aslan Brewing. The result? The beloved Bacon Burger, featuring their Whatcom Blue as a key ingredient.
For Lindsay, cheesemaking is as much about community as it is about craftsmanship. The creamery is proud to support not only Twin Brook Dairy but also other local producers. Their retail shop offers more than just their own cheese, you’ll find local honey, chocolate, peanut butter, and other artisan goods, all carefully curated to complement their cheeses. And of course, they love inviting people to the creamery to experience it all firsthand. From watching cheese being made to chatting with the cheesemakers themselves. Twin Sisters provides a true small town cheese experience.
