October Highlight: Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Agency
OCTOBER NONPROFIT HIGHLIGHT: NOOKSACK SALMON ENHANCMENT AGENCY
The Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Agency (NSEA) is a vital part of a statewide network of nonprofit organizations in Washington committed to restoring and protecting salmon and steelhead populations. Through hands-on work with local communities, volunteers, and landowners, NSEA leads efforts to revitalize our watersheds for future generations. Their mission centers on three pillars: education, restoration, and stewardship.
Education
NSEA engages people of all ages in salmon recovery through interactive, place-based learning opportunities:
Internship Program – Offering hands-on experience in environmental restoration and education.
Summer Camps – Inspiring youth to become stewards of their environment.
Teacher Trainings – Providing educators with tools to bring salmon science into the classroom.
Students for Salmon – A field-based science program that connects students directly to stream ecosystems.
Restoration
To support healthy salmon runs, NSEA leads on-the-ground projects that improve habitat and remove obstacles:
Fish Passage Improvements – Removing barriers to allow migrating salmon to reach their spawning grounds.
Streambank Restoration – Stabilizing eroded banks and planting native vegetation to improve water quality.
In-Stream Habitat Enhancement – Adding logs, rocks, and other structures to create shelter and spawning areas for fish.
Stewardship
Through community involvement, NSEA cultivates long-term care for the environment:
Volunteer Restoration Parties – Hands-on events where community members help plant trees and restore habitat.
Citizen Science – Engaging volunteers in data collection and environmental monitoring.
Salmon Sighting Events – Inviting the public to witness and celebrate the salmon’s return each season.
Aslan is matching all donations made to NSEA through our online and in-house round up program (up to $2,000) throughout October.
