May Nonprofit Highlight: WA Farmland Trust

MAY NONPROFIT HIGHLIGHT: WASHINGTON FARMLAND TRUST

“Washington Farmland Trust protects and stewards threatened farmland across the state. We keep land in production by making it accessible to a new generation of farmers.”

Washington Farmland Trust has made significant strides in protecting the region’s agricultural landscape, conserving 34 farm properties spanning 3,747 acres to date. Their mission extends beyond land preservation, they work to safeguard the environment, sustain rural economies, and ensure that farmers can continue feeding their communities.

Through conservation easements, WA Farmland Trust compensates landowners in exchange for permanently removing development rights from farmland. This guarantees that the land’s soil, water, and open space remain available for farming in perpetuity. Additionally, when farmland prices become prohibitive for prospective farmers, they can step in to purchase conservation easements at the time of sale, helping make the land more affordable.

For properties facing urgent development threats, Washington Farmland Trust employs a Buy-Protect-Sell strategy. By raising funds to purchase at-risk farmland, they remove its development potential before leasing or selling it back to farmers, ensuring that these vital lands remain in production.

With every acre conserved, Washington Farmland Trust is securing a future where local farms thrive, rural communities prosper, and fresh food remains accessible for generations to come.

Aslan is matching all donations made to the WA Farmland Trust through our online and in-house round up program (up to $2,000) throughout May.
